PLAYING THE SANDBOX
Technical specification: installation, 2016, porcelain, concrete, 350 x 350 cm
“Playing Sandbox” consists of including a monumental sculpture of Moses, a copy of Michelangelo’s work, standing in the corridor the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in an artistic action. For this purpose, the figure of the prophet who was selected by God to lead the nation of Israelites from Egypt and announce to them the Covenant was surrounded by a concrete container resembling a sandbox. Instead of sand, it was filled with crushed ceramic pieces. The ceramic was smashed around the statue of Moses enclosed in the circle. The piece was inspired by images – omnipresent in the media at the time – of dramatic scenes depicting refugees attempting an escape and their bodies washing up on the shores. Sometimes they were young children and people who lost them in the course of a heroic pursuit of a better life. The artist was looking for associations, as universal as possible, with the notion of home which signifies safety. This is how she decided on ceramics which requires sand for its manufacturing.
